EXPEDITION AFRICA 2013

Expedition Africa has been in the back of my mind for a number of years. It’s a shorter project than London – Cape Town and so accessible to more riders who want a challenging motorcycling experience with a highly professional team but have the usual time constraints that a busy life provides. Pound for pound, day for day, this trip is a gem and incredible good value. Hotels we use will be the best we can find as 12 countries are crossed in just over 5 weeks with the expedition racking up around 250 to 300 miles a day with plenty of time off to relax and enjoy where we are and what we are seeing. Simply put, Expedition Africa has the potential to be a truly phenomenal adventure, quite possibly the best value for money high quality African Expedition in the motorcycling world.

Free weekend at the Centre

This is included and a date will be drawn up for later in the year, allowing us an opportunity to test out camping and riding equipment and also to get to know the other entrants. Off-road training will be offered.

The Route

Having followed a circular route as far north as north Lake Malawi in Malawi. It is intended to start and finish in Cape Town. This is a very kind route – lovely people and fantastic locations. Bikes would be shipped by container from the UK to Cape Town whereby the journey would embark on what would be one of the most ambitious group rides attempted in south and central Africa. Heading north across South Africa to the Richersveld National Park the journey enters Namibia and progresses to the beautiful city of Windhoek before turning west for Swakopmund and Walvis Bay. The route then leads us to Maun and the Okavango Delta and salt pans in Botswana. We then head north and cross the Chobe National Park as well as the amazing Kalahari Desert as we continue north into Zambia to see the Victoria Falls at Livingstone. We then take the road to Lusaka and then the Luangwa National Park. We then continue to the northern tip of Lake Malawi in Malawi and follow the lake shore south exiting this beautiful country before entering Mozambique. The journey continues to,Swaziland, Lesotho and back before dipping down to Hermanus on the coast to Cape Town via the magnificent Karoo and the wine valleys of Franschhoek and Paarl. Accommodation where possible will be in beautiful guest houses.

London - Cape Town 2014

London – Cape Town is one of the classic routes of the world. In motoring terms it is absolutely iconic with great adventurers such as Robert Jefferson, Paul Graetz, Major Chaplin Court Treatt, Alan Gilg, Walter Kay and in 1963 the Barnsley car dealer Eric Jackson who pioneered the long distance capabilities of the then new Ford Cortina.

There are many heroes who have driven this great route and any self respecting around the world motorcyclist must have this itinerary in their portfolio if their expeditioning is to be taken seriously. I rode this route as part of my Parallel World Expedition riding to the top and bottom of each of the continents where it was possible and Africa proved to be the highlight of the trip.

London – Cape Town is one of the most remarkable expedition routes in the history of motoring and this journey is now available to a strictly selected small group of riders. Applications are now invited for places.

The Route

Depending on the political situation in Syria at the time, the route will either start from London and go directly to Istanbul, cross into Syria and then Jordon before heading north to Cairo having taken the ferry at Aqaba to the Egyptian port of Nuweba we will travel west to St Katherine’s Monastery and then north to Cairo. After which we travel south down the Nile Valley to Aswan to board the ferry across Lake Nasser to Wadi Halfa.
The journey continues across the infamous Nubian Desert and onto Khartoum. We have a choice of riding south to Uganda or east to Ethiopia. My preference is to go south and then into Rwanda and Burundi, Tanzania, Zambia, the Caprivi Strip in Namibia the west and south to Windhoek and over to the Skeleton Coast at Swakopmund and Walvis Bay. It should then be a formality to get to Cape Town entering South Africa at Richtersveld National Park.

A 14 day expedition, led by world record rider Nick Sanders to the edge of the sahara and south to the Anti-Atlas mountains. This is the ultimate 'On-Road' north african riding experience and is fully supported with an accompanying doctor and one of the most experienced crews in the world.

Free Weekend at the Centre

As with ‘Incredible USA’ this journey starts with a free weekend at Nicks’ Expedition Centre at home in Wales. These pre-expedition weekends allow us all to get to know each other before we go. It’s a period of time designed to prepare for the project properly. Dates to meet Nick will be announced, just email the office with your interest.

The Route

The route starts off similarly to the shorter ride with Erik but includes a day off in Merzouga where travell by camel deep into the dunes to spend a night in a Berber tent where we eat dinner and then sleep under the stars. This is a magnificent experience and is included in the price. The next day we return by camel to our hotel where we change and shower and then get back onto the bike - not a moment is wasted! Nick will guide you across the back bone of the Sahara where Morocco meets Algeria. We travel further south to the Anti-Atlas Mountains, eating in restaurants known to Nick and staying in fabulous hotels with impeccable service, also known to Nick over many many years.
